Background
Sandwiched between the Ukraine and Romania, Moldova lies in the heart of eastern Europe. Home to 4.5 million people, Moldova is a lovely country filled with rolling green hills, picturesque villages, limpid lakes, sunflowers, and vineyards. Moldovans are descended from the Dacians, who were conquered by the Romans in the first century A.D. Following this was more than a millennium of instability and change, as the region was repeatedly invaded by neighboring countries. More recently, Moldova was a part of Romania but came under Russian rule in 1940. Moldova declared independence in 1991.
Primarily of Romanian/Russian ancestry, the children available for adoption from Moldova live in orphanages. In 2003, Americans adopted 12 children from Moldova.
